About Laryngectomy & Voice Care
After a total laryngectomy, breathing takes place through a stoma in the neck, and a set of daily-use supplies is built around that stoma. This collection includes heat and moisture exchangers (HMEs), adhesive baseplates, laryngectomy tubes and buttons, voice prosthesis accessories, and stoma care products from Atos Medical, InHealth and others. It sits within Respiratory Supplies, alongside nebulizers, nasal cannulas and CPAP supplies.
System is the first attribute. HMEs, baseplates, adhesives and hands-free speaking valves are designed to work within one manufacturer's system, and parts from different systems do not always connect. If you use Atos Medical Provox components, for instance, choose HMEs and baseplates from the same system. Size is the second attribute: baseplates come in different shapes and adhesive strengths, laryngectomy tubes by diameter and length, and voice prostheses by diameter and shaft length. Voice prosthesis sizing and placement are handled as specified by your clinician or speech-language pathologist.
The REF number on each package is the reliable way to reorder the identical baseplate, HME or accessory. Most of these items are consumed daily or weekly and are sold in boxes or multi-packs, as each listing states.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make sure HMEs and baseplates work together?
Stay within one manufacturer's system, since each uses its own connection between HME, baseplate and any speaking valve. Then choose the baseplate shape and adhesive that suit your stoma and skin. Voice prosthesis sizes and any changes to your setup should be confirmed with your clinician or speech-language pathologist.
Are laryngectomy supplies covered by insurance?
Many laryngectomy supplies have HCPCS codes, including codes for HMEs, adhesive housings and tubes, and may be eligible for coverage with a prescription. Any codes on our pages are shown for reference only. Coverage, monthly quantity limits and documentation requirements depend on your payer and plan.
How do I reorder the same supplies?
Use the REF number printed on your current box of HMEs, baseplates or accessories and search for it on our site. That number identifies the system, size and adhesive type. Items are usually sold by the box or multi-pack, and listings state the count so you can match your usual supply.
