Alginate and gelling fiber dressings are soft, highly absorbent primary dressings designed for wounds with moderate to heavy drainage. Alginates are made from seaweed-derived fibers, while gelling fibers use carboxymethylcellulose, and both form a soft gel as they take up wound fluid. Two formats are available. Flat pads are cut or placed over the wound surface, while ropes or ribbons are designed for filling deeper wounds and tunnels.
